Today, the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing entitled “Terminations of Individual Health Policies by Insurance Companies.” The hearing examined the practice of “post-claims underwriting,” which occurs when insurance companies cancel individual health insurance policies after providers submit claims for medical services rendered. The Committee conducted an investigation into the practice of health insurance rescission, and the results were alarming. Over the past five years, almost 20000 individual insurance policyholders have had their policies rescinded by the three insurance companies who testified today: Assurant, UnitedHealth Group, and WellPoint.

THE PROPOSAL The healthcare reform proposal being advanced in congress, while imperfect, would bring long overdue changes to a broken system. Far from being rushed, the proposals that make up this reform have been debated for years, and this congress has been working on a bill for many months. It’s time for an up or down vote on reform. Getting It Right (Part 2) is the second and final part of a training video by the Wales Mental Health in Primary Care Network aimed at mental health primary care staff and practitioners. The training included in the video is provided by WaMH in PC’s Vice Chair Dr Mark Boulter and is based on a report from a series of focus groups run by Welsh mental health organisations HAFAL and MIND Cymru. The focus groups looked at the experience of primary care patients and the good practice which is out there for staff and practitioners to follow. They also looked at the barriers which exist and prevent people with mental health problems from gaining access to treatment. We suggest that mental health teams use this video as part of their induction for new staff so they can begin to understand mental health issues in greater depth.
