Smoking Risk

Smokers learned that their lifetime risk of getting lung cancer is 12 times that of nonĀ­ smokers, and that that rate dropped to a threefold 11sk if they abandoned the habit. In a study of 8,006 Japanese-American men in Hawaii, smokers also faced increased t1sk for cancers of the bladder, esophagus, kidney, mouth and pancreas.

In the American Journal of Public Health, Honolulu researchers suggested that physicians support smoking-cessation programs that enable Cuttent smokers to quit permanently within the shortest time period.
