Respiratory Disease
A Canadian study concluded that asthma patients need better advice on preĀ exercise medication in order to break out of a vicious circle of increasing breathlessness and exercise avoidance. A study of 27 asthma patients found that most of the subjects mistakenly thought their disease prevented them from exercising; 75% reported having suffered post exercise wheezing in the past and 80% said that their physicians had not recommended prophylactic medication. However, when premeditated, none showed symptoms during exercise testing conducted at Toronto Hospital in Ontario.
When the report appeared in the American Review of Respiratory Disease, commentators reminded asthma patients that exercise-induced breathlessness gets worse as fitness decreases and de-conditioning also raises the risk for other health disorders.
