Baby Cribs
Infants less than a year old who sleep in adult beds or in unsafe baby cribs are at risk of accidental death, revealed a study in the American Journal of Diseases of Children. Small changes in a baby’s sleeping environment could prevent these deaths, advised the researcher from the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Program in Louisville. She examined the records of 36 accidental infant deaths from 1979 to 1989; eight were caused by unsafe sleeping conditions. Mattresses too small for the cribs led to three deaths when infants became wedged between the crib rails and the mattress.
